Tax Position for Thailand Privilege Holders
Thailand operates a remittance-based territorial tax system for individuals. Key rules for long-stay visa holders:
- Foreign-sourced income not remitted to Thailand in the same tax year: not taxable
- Foreign-sourced income remitted to Thailand: taxable at progressive rates (5–35%) — but careful planning allows most members to avoid Thai tax entirely
- No wealth tax, no inheritance tax, no capital gains tax on foreign assets
- Thailand Privilege does not come with a work permit — members cannot work in Thailand under this visa
Note: Thailand amended its tax rules in 2024 — income remitted from any year (not just current year) is now technically assessable. This is evolving; verify with a Thai tax advisor for your specific situation.
Is Thailand Privilege Right for You?
